Data are derived from eight main sources, ranging from the CIA World Factbook, 1993 to the U.S. Department of Interior's 1992 publication Minerals in the World Economy. In addition, an introductory chapter includes a world overview of population, agriculture, mineral resources, oil, oceans, and climatic changes and other topics.... Although this book provides much useful information, it is not clear whom the compiler intended as his audience. While the introductory chapter provides a good overview of the Third World, most of the other information is readily available in several sources that include all the countries of the world. Europa Year Book, for instance, provides up-to-date narratives on politics and government and easy-to-read charts on minerals and exports and imports, among other items. Statesman's Year-Book provides a narrative interspersed with many useful charts. Both these other books provide vastly more information than this specialized title on the Third World. Furthermore, the arrangement of countries by World Bank categories, such as low-and middle-income economies and oil states, is unhelpful to general readers used to the unified alphabetical listing of the above-named sources. If a future edition of Resources of the Third World is published, the compiler should explicitly state what information in the volume is unique and why it is useful in a reference-book market already glutted with excellent country surveys. ... Grouped by economic activity, each survey is succinct but extensive, dealing with the activities of multinationals in that country as well as government policy on development. Most helpful are the sections describing the importance of the mineral base as well as other sectors of the economy.
